The training guidelines required for research involving animal models are listed below. The Universtity of Pittsburgh uses the internet-based Studies in Education and Research (ISER) and the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training sites for its required training. This does not include Environmental Health and Safety requirements such as Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training and TB testing requirements.

NOTE: If you are conducting human subject research, please refer to the training module entitled “Human Subject Research – Training & Guidance”.

The following table outlines modules required for animal-based research. Once modules have been completed, you will receive an e-mail certificate suitable for printing. Please keep track of your records of completion. Recertification is required every four years. Directions for accessing CITI training (PDF) are available.

Species-specific Models:

Note: Users are required to take the Purpose Bred Mice and Rats in Research, Testing and Teaching (general) module or the Large Animal Research and Training (general) module and all applicable species-specific modules as per protocol. This must be completed every four years.

Animal Research Protections provides additional training and learning opportunities through the Environmental Health and Safety Department and AALAS Learning Library.
