Training of Personnel

The U.S. Government Principles Health Research Extension Act of 1985 and the PHS Policy repeatedly refer to appropriately trained, qualified, and experienced personnel, and availability of instruction and training. The institution is responsible for the training of its staff. To ensure compliance, no person can be listed on an active IACUC protocol until completion of the University of Pittsburgh's required training is verified.

IACUC Training Modules

The training guidelines required for research involving ANIMAL MODELS are listed below. This list does not include Environmental Health and Safety requirements. If you have questions about requirements or certifications, contact your program director, supervisor, or one of the following:

Animal-based Research:

Environmental Health and Safety:

NOTE: If you are conducting human subject research, please refer to the training module entitled “Human Subject Research – Training & Guidance”.

The following table outlines modules required for animal-based research. Once modules have been completed, you will receive an e-mail certificate suitable for printing. Please keep track of your records of completion.

Training and Medical Surveillance

The purpose of the Animal Exposure Surveillance Program (AESP) is to provide:

  • relevant occupational health and safety information related to use and care of animals;
  • occupationally indicated immunizations;
  • and
 clinical evaluation and treatment for individuals with animal related injuries or illnesses.

The IACUC requires that individuals listed on protocols complete the training and medical surveillance requirements of the Environmental Health and Safety Department (see, including enrollment in the University’s medical surveillance program for animal users, known as the Animal Exposure Surveillance Program, and the completion of training sessions that are dependent on the hazards involved with each particular study.

Learning Library

The Learning Library offers a variety of courses which emphasize the appropriate handling, care and use of animals in research. Courses include a wide range of topics encompassing many points of interest. A few course titles include: "Anesthesia, Analgesia and Surgery", "Compliance and IACUC Training" as well as many species-specific training courses. Feel free to visit the Learning Library website to explore all the options available.

Principal Investigators and their laboratory staff members interested in receiving an account on our roster are encouraged to contact the IACUC learning library group coordinator. Once the account is assigned, your laboratory group will be able to access the learning library.
