Changes in IACUC Training Requirements

Responsible Conduct of Research Training Requirement

As noted in a University-wide announcement earlier this year, all personnel who conduct research at the University of Pittsburgh must complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training course prior to engaging in research, and subsequently every four years. Since this requirement is new for individuals listed on IACUC protocols, the implementation date was delayed to February 1, 2018.

Effective in February 2018, all individuals listed on an IACUC protocol must have completed CITI RCR training in the last four years in order for the protocol to be approved. This requirement applies to new IACUC protocol submissions, and both annual and three-year renewals of protocols.

The CITI RCR Module can be accessed through the University's CITI Training Portal

Note that completion of the legacy "Research Integrity (Formerly RPF Module 1)" course in the past four years does not satisfy the new University requirement. Individuals who completed this legacy course must take the CITI RCR course by February 1, 2018 in order to be listed on an IACUC protocol.

Recent Revisions to Animal User Training

The IACUC recently changed retraining requirements, such that completion of pertinent animal research training modules is only required every four years.

Most of the training modules have been streamlined, and a "test out" feature was added for individuals who are familiar with the module content.

Note that the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Department also mandates training for animal users, depending on the agents specified in a protocol. IACUC protocols are not approved until both IACUC and  EH&S training requirements are satisfied.

Changes in University training requirements will affect IACUC protocol approvals in 2018, including approvals of annual protocol renewals. Please assure that all personnel listed on your protocols are up-to-date on training.

Principal investigators can view the training history for individuals listed on the protocol in the ARO protocol management system, by clicking on the protocol link, followed by clicking on the "training records" tab.

Training requirements for animal users are listed on the IACUC training page.
